Most recent investment in renewable energy is in a 30.4 MW wind farm in Turkey: Anemon Enerji. The new construction consists of a grid connecting 38 wind turbines and has anticipated electricity output of 108,000 MWh per year, which is expected to reduce the equivalent of 74,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Anemon Enerji has been certified by The Gold Standard, a certification scheme that recognizes the best projects in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Joint Implementation (JI) and voluntary offset markets. Over 49 non governmental organizations, including Greenpeace, REEEP, and WWF International, endorse the Gold Standard method.

7.2 MW ARES Wind Power Plant in Turkey
ARES is Turkey's first B.O.T. (Build-Operate-Transfer) wind power plant, located 80 km from Izmir on the western end of Çesme Peninsula. Since its inauguration end of November 1998, the plant has produces annualy 19 Million kWh of clean energy. ARES provides for 20 % of the electricity consumed by coastal towns of Alaçati and Çesme, with a population of 50'000 in winter and over 100'000 during summer.

Interwind Ltd. developed the project from wind measurements on site, over the thorny roads of the first B.O.T. wind energy contract of Turkey, up to grid connection. The project was initiated by Mr. Ergün Özakat of Çesme, Mr. Remzi Özen, the Mayor of the Municipality of Alaçati and Lockheed Martin Investment Holding A.S. of Ankara. The wind park was financed by Gücbirligi Holding A.S. Izmir, which also is the majority shareholder and operator of the wind park.

ARES has proven that it is possible to realize feasible wind energy projects in Turkey, with Turkish financing. This first B.O.T. wind park has opened a new era: Interwind expects 250-300 MW installed wind power in Turkey by the end of 2001.
